My name is Alexandria Pearsall. I am a senoir at Bowie State University. My major is Early Childhood/Special Education. I plan to teach in Prince George's County Public Schools or Montgomery County Public Schools. I prefer to teach young students in grade 3 or 4. I have always worked with children, even when I was young working summer jobs. I made a certain decision to become a teacher when I went on a field trip with my son and his 3rd grade class. I spent time conversing with the students and I was elated to see their eyes light up when I gave them a piece of information they did not know. I said to myself, "This is what I want to do." It just felt right. I currently work in the PrinceGeorge's County Public School System in the Before and After School Extended Learning Program. The group of students I work with are in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade. I enjoy assisting them with their homework and very often they will say to me, "You should be a teacher." At that point, I feel on top of the world!
My Philosophy of Teaching
I believe teachers have the ability to critically impact students lives. The typical school day is about 6-7 hours long, that is a lot of time and educators need to be sure that their impressions and influences upon students are positive and meaningful. It is for this reason I believe that teaching is more than a job, it's a calling. Teachers aren't just the classroom instructors. Teachers are any and everyone who comes in contact with students at any given time. I am a strict advocate of the collaboration of the school community, neighborhood, church and parents in order to rear sucessful children. In my opinion, it's our duty as adults to contribute whatever we have that will make students well-rounded individuals. When I say well-rounded I mean spiritually, academically, physically, emotionally and mentally. Each entity goes hand and hand.
